Mission Impossible: Judging the YumUniverse 1st Birthday Recipe Contest

From left to right: Rea Frey Holguin, Maya Henderson, Mark Beier, Valerie Bolon and Heather Crosby

Yes, yes, we are announcing the Top 5 Finalists for the YumUniverse 1st Birthday Recipe Contest today, we just want to show you what was behind this difficult decision. Look for the Top 5 Finalists after lunchtime (T-minus 3 hours)!

DAY ONE:
I started out by setting up a long table full of the ingredients that we needed like citrus…

… and veggies.

Then some fun stuff like these straws and cookie cutters…

… and Russian dolly measuring cups.

Then Team YU arrived (everyone but Kathy, she was my Day Two sidekick)!

We started the day by selecting recipes from a pile of 23.

We each picked a spot in the kitchen to set up a station so we could get down to business.

Here is where former Top Chef contestant Val Bolon got busy.

And YU Contributor Rea Frey Holguin picked a spot by the Darth Vadar cookie jar.

This was my spot.

And Maya Henderson, plant-based foodie and wellness expert was right next to me.

This is our new YumUniverse contributor Mark Beier! Look for an interview with him soon. He is a chef and fitness expert that will be sharing all kinds of tips and fitness suggestions with YU soon.

This is Mark’s postage stamp of a station. He rocked it.

We cooked. We tasted.

Tasted some more.

And again.

We smiled a lot. We had fun.

We made a mess.

We worked storage miracles.

And everyone left happy, beyond full with decisions to be made.

DAY TWO:
Contributors Kathy Beymer and Val Bolon helped me knock out the rest of the recipes.

Again, we made a mess.

But this time we had a little angel to taste with us—Kathy’s beautiful daughter Elise.

Who do you think will be in the Top 5? Check back after lunch to see the finalists!

Looks like a lot of fun! I can imagine it was really hard to pick the finalists. Everything looks so tasty. So who cleaned up the mess?

  • Heather Crosby Aug 10, 2011 8:11 am

It was a true team effort. We made a mess together and we cleaned it up together. Most importantly, we had a great time!

Jenné, I haven’t stopped making your pineapple almond balls – they are my new favorite thing! :)
