Brendan Brazier’s Lemon Lime Recovery Drink

Brendan Brazier’s Lemon Lime Recovery Drink has changed my workout recovery so much that I actually start craving this drink when I’m still at the gym. I can feel my muscles looking forward it’s healing powers. After a big workout, as soon as I get home I drink this magic, and wake up the next morning with only the slightest, almost non-existent soreness. It has become an integral part of my routine, and if you are an active person, or wanting to be an active person, I highly recommend following up your workouts with this creamy, citrus-flavored beverage. It’s filling and satisfying enough that it sometimes (most times) becomes my dinner.

I purchased Brendan’s book Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life a few years ago, and in my constantly growing library of vegan, raw and plant-based references, it is hands-down one of my favorites. His point-of-view regarding nutritional stress and his suggestions for reducing it, really resonate with me. They truly have helped me take my health to the next level.

As you can see from the pic above, my copy of THRIVE wears the stained and dog-eared character of an artist’s beloved moleskin journal. I’ve read THRIVE probably 4 times through and I’m sure I’ll do it again. But first, I had to share my slight adaptation of this recipe with my fellow gym/workout rats. Thankfully, Brendan is a generous man and gave me the go-ahead!

Makes: about 3 cups
Preparation Time: 5-10 mins

Tools:
Blender

Ingredients:
Juice of 1/2 organic lemon
Juice of 1/4 organic lime
4 Medjool dates, pitted (how-to)
2 tbsp wild-harvested honey (Brendan calls for agave, but I like to use honey. Use what you like.)
1 tbsp hemp protein powder
1 tsp dulse flakes
1 tsp hemp oil (or a blend of 1/2 tsp hemp oil, 1/4 tsp pumpkin seed oil, 1/4 tsp flaxseed oil)
1/2 tsp lemon zest
1 tbsp virgin, expeller-pressed coconut oil (optional)
1/2 tsp maca powder (optional, for extra adrenal nourishment)

Let’s Get Started:
Place all of your ingredients in the blender and mix until thoroughly blended. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Store any leftover in an airtight container for up to three days. Some settling may occur, so re-blend before drinking. I think it tastes best fresh, so cut the recipe in half if you think the amount may be too much.

Tips + Substitutions:
1. Try using young coconut water instead of regular water.
2. Add 1 tbsp hemp seed.
3. Don’t be afraid of the taste of dulse, the citrus neutralizes the sea flavor and Brendan says that “sea [veggies] are one of the most nutritionally dense foods in the world. Containing 10x the calcium of cow’s milk and several times more iron than red meat. Sea vegetables are easily-digestible, chlorophyll-rich and alkaline-forming. Packed with minerals, sea vegetables are the richest source of naturally occurring electrolytes known. Electrolytes allow our cells to stay hydrated longer, thereby improving endurance—of particular significance to active people.”

Love the Brazier! Do you drink this all as one serving, or split it into more?

    Hi there Katie~
We outta start a Brendan Brazier fan club, huh?

I tend to drink the whole thing over the course of an hour when I return from the gym, but if I ever feel full, I put the remaining in the fridge in an airtight container and finish it off in the morning. I have also been known to drink the entire serving in about 15 minutes too—I love this stuff. I just listen to what my body needs each time and adjust my amount accordingly.

Brendan’s book is fantastic. ANYONE interested in fitness should read it. I devoured it as soon as I got it last year. It was my bible when training for my first marathon last year… I need to pull that book out again! There are great recipes in there!

How many servings does this recipe make?

  • Heather Crosby Oct 3, 2010 11:17 pm

Hi Rachael! I indicate that it makes about 3 cups worth, which I tend to drink in one serving, sometimes two. Enjoy!

I was just about to ask what the serving size is, but looks like you just answered it. Thanks! I love this recipe (so much better than the papaya one).

I may need to invest in a better blender, my dates are a little chunky :)
