Your chocolate smoothie looks delicious. When I travel I can’t miss out on my raw vegan smoothies, so I have invested in a great cooler. Keep other fruits and veggies in there as well, so def eat healthy on the road as well as at home!

this looks great! Have you done much research into agave? We quit using it after I fully understood what it was. We used it for years without knowing the negatives though, I guess that’s how it goes, can’t always trust what the companies say.

Hi there Brittany,
Thanks for the question. I have read about the controversy over agave through and through—I’ve experienced the shock, the sadness, the frustration and the information expedition stages. While I am using it less in my recipes as well these days (more b/c I am in love with nutritious sweeteners like honey and sucanat), I do continue to use agave from trusted sources, which is what I recommend throughout the site (providing links to the companies that have assured me that their agave is raw). As with all natural sweeteners though, I use them in moderation in my daily life. Sugar is sugar, and ultimately, we have to choose what feels right for our individual bodies. This is why, almost all recipes on YU offer up alternatives to agave in the ingredients listing.
You can read more about my thoughts, as well as find link to both sides of the story, re: agave here and here. Stay tuned for a post about this topic coming soon!
Hi, the Maya’s Chocolate Covered Cherry SuperFood Smoothie” sounds fabulous, but you left out the nutrition value like, calorie, fat, sodium, potatassium, carbs (sugar) etc……….
Hi there Rimona~
Great comment, thank you for bringing up this topic! My approach to meals is to primarily think about foods in their whole state—not as the sum of many parts. This has served me incredible well for about 5 years now. Letting go of the obsessive “nutritionism” (that exhausts and confuses the heck out of the majority of us) has actually led me to a place where I feel stronger, more energetic and happier than ever. I tend to think of food in broad strokes. Am I getting enough quality grains, healthy fats, protein, water, a variety of colors in my diet? Am I keeping the sugar to a minimum? Are my portions reasonable? Am I eating a balanced variety of food?
There are many levels of nourishment (macro, micro, trace, things microscopes can’t pick up) going on in each grain, vegetable and piece of fruit, and I believe that nature intended for us to consume the whole package. Consider this: if all we needed was more beta carotene, for example, a beta carotene “food” would grow in the ground instead of a carrot.
I definitely understand and appreciate the fact that some of you need/want to monitor different types of specific nutritional info. So, in some posts I will point out a few nutritional highlights, but ultimately, I will leave it up to individuals to run recipes through many of the software programs/apps that exist out there for the specific nutritional information they are looking for.
This is an interesting article on the topic by Michael Pollan. Particularly the “From Food to Nutrients” section.
