Raw Blueberry Hemp Milk

Raw_Blueberry_Hemp_Milk

The other day, I came home to a package with four beautiful milk bottles in it accompanied by a lovely note from the kind person who sent them to me (because they appreciated my Raw Almond Milk). Sadly, I couldn’t read the signature on the note and the mailing label that I had set on the counter to send a thankyouthankyouthankyou note to was accidentally thrown out by my boyfriend. Silly boyfriend. I am touched and grateful for the generosity of this kind person and since I have no way to reach them, I must post my new favorite mornin’ beverage using one of these lovely bottles.I had been feeling sluggish during my workouts, so I ordered Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life by Brendan Brazier. I have to say that for me, this book has made an incredible difference. Brendan covers the nutritional benefits of hemp seeds in his book and he incorporates them into many of his recipes (also in the book). Since I started eating more hemp seeds, I feel unstoppable in my workouts and my recovery is noticeably quicker. I have been boxing training quite a bit and the strength and stamina I have has greatly improved. I have been using plain hemp milk on my homemade cereals and yesterday I had a lovely box of blueberries in the fridge from the Pilsen Community Market so I thought, “mashup”.

Try freezing this recipe to make blueberry cream popsicles!

Makes: approx. 4 cups  |  Preparation Time: 15mins

Tools needed:
Blender

Ingredients:
2/3 cup of organic Hemp Seeds
3 cups coconut water (can use plain water, but coconut water is the yummiest and super hydrating)
1 cup organic blueberries
2 tbsp raw agave nectar (can substitute organic maple syrup, raw yacon syrup or raw honey to taste. Note that honey isn’t considered “vegan” and maple syrup isn’t considered “raw”)
dash fine ground Pink Himalayan sea salt (can substitute Celtic sea salt)

Let’s get started:
Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Pour some in an adorable glass and store the rest in a beautiful bottle in your fridge. Enjoy!

NOTE: Look for unique ingredients in your local health food store and try the bulk section for the cost savings. Ask your grocer to stock the ingredients that you need. Look for fresh, organic blueberries at your local Farmers’ Market.

so…. i make this recipe but to be honest, it just didn’t taste good to me. so i added a banana, and then another one, and 4 cubes of ice, and now it is drinkable to me. can’t say i love it but trying to get used to it. my question is, i know that there is a lot of potassium in coconut water. is it too much in one drink to have the coconut water and 2 bananas? would love to hear your opinion on it and also if you have a suggestion of how to get used to the hemp. I’m working out for a triathlon now and would like to incorporate more of it in my diet.
    thank you!!!!

    Hi there Elana~
Hemp does have a unique nutty flavor that takes getting used to for some folks. I know people who eat the seeds plain right out of the bag they love them so much, and I know some people who eat hemp seed only for the quality protein. I have grown to love hemp and actually crave it, especially after workouts, but I do remember my first taste of hemp. Thankfully, I did enjoy it right away, but not without noting its surprising flavor. With the amount of banana you needed to get to a drinkable state, I’m guessing you are like me and have a bit of a sweet tooth? Try again with the hemp milk, but maybe add sweeter fruits like organic strawberries with your banana. Peaches? Try the milk with no fruit, just use natural sweeteners—like honey or dates—and add cinnamon? or raw cacao powder? With all the training you are doing, your body should use up the sugar no problem, but I recommend checking with your doctor regarding the potassium quantity. If you still aren’t having luck with adding hemp protein to your smoothies, try adding the seeds to more savory foods. Sprinkle on salads, make some protein-rich buckwheat noodles with steamed veggies (great recipes coming soon) and mix in some hemp seed. As long as you don’t cook/heat them, they maintain their nutritional profile, so add the little buggers to all kinds of foods (post-cooking) to see what you like. Have you tried a spoonful plain? Stay tuned to YU for more hemp recipes, I’m sure we can find something that works for you, and in the meantime, keep me posted on your explorations…

Thanks for your honesty and best of luck with your training too!
